Abstract: Objective:To evaluate the early effects of mitomycin C(MMC)on combined phacoemulsification, posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation, and trabeculectomy (phacotrabeculectomy) in patients with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG).Methods:Thirty-three(thirty-three eyes) patients who were dignosed with PACG combined with catract were randomly divided into two groups ,MMC group(fourteen eyes) and control group(nineteen eyes). All the cases were treated with phacotrabeculectomy.Visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), and complications and bleb survival probability were evaluated. Results:The best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)improved and mean IOP decreased significantly after phacotrabeculectomy in both groups. The mean IOP reduction was significantly greater in eyes with MMC group in 12w.(P <0.05). The bleb survival probability in MMC group was higher than control group, but was not significant (P>0.05).The early postoperative complication rates were similar in both groups. Conclusion:Phacotrabeculectomy with MMC results in greater IOP reduction which can be effective method in controlling intraocular pressure level.
