Abstract: [Objective] To discuss the operation techniques and therapy effects in treating adult mid-shaft fractures of clavicle with cannulated Herbert screws. [Methods] Between 2009.9 and 2010.12, twenty seven patients with mid-shaft clavicle fractures were recruited from the Third affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University, Changzhou. The twenty seven patients were made up of 20 men and 7 women with an average age of 34.8 years. Mid-shaft fractures were fixed by cannulated Herbert screws through minimal invasive incision. The mean length of incision was 2.0cm. [Results] All 27 patients were followed up for 14.7 months (range10 to 18 months). All fractures of this group achieved bone union at average 11.3 weeks) postoperatively. No severe complications, such as incision infections and neurovascular injuries, occurred in this group. No delayed union, nonunion and Screw breakage were found in follow-up. The mean UCLA score was 34.3 at the end time of follow-up. [Conclusion] This study showed that midshaft clavicle fracture fixed with cannulated Herbert screw minimal invasively obtained good immobilization, excellent bone union and less complications. Moreover, it has advantages of simple operation techniques and protect blood supply. It may be a better choice to treat midshaft clavicle fracture for young adults and women who love beauty.
