Abstract: 【Abstract】Objective To compare the healing outcomes of superficial abscess wounds dressed with either crude undiluted honey or traditional gauze. Methods 65 patients with fresh surgical incision and drainage of the superficial abcesses were randomized assigned into honey group(n=33)and traditional group(n=32).The wounds were left to close spontaneously with once every two days wound dressing with either honey or traditional gauze in two randomized treatment groups. Both groups were comparable at baseline. Results After 3 days and 7 days of treatment, wounds treated by honey dressing had less exudation(Points) than those treated by tridational gauze (the third day:t=2.473,P<0.05;the seventh day: t=2.051,P<0.05); Honey appeared to be more effective than traditional dressing in promoting wound healing after 21 days of treatment(Z=2.542,P<0.05;); Honey appeared to be less painful(Points) than traditional gauze during dressing changes(t=2.443,P<0.05;); The healing time(days) of the honey group was significantly shorter than the traditional group(t=2.842,P<0.01); The cure rates were 100% in both groups ; There was no adverse reaction occurred in the two groups. Conclusion The use of honey dressing is effective and practical for incised superficial abcesses.
